School is in session which means it's the perfect time to run a FamilyWatchdog search and check on your kid's route to school and to check the neighborhood where the bus stop is.
Many states have laws that prevent registered sex offenders from living too close to schools and parks, but there are no laws that restricts their residence based on bus stop location. Given that suburban and rural America is scattered with bus stops, it is extremely likely that there are registered sex offenders who live near school bus stops. Registered sex offenders can move just like anyone else.
What if there is a registered sex offender near my child's bus stop?
A child should have a chaperone at each bus stop.This duty can be shared between parents (or even an older, responsible sibling) so everyone can make it to work on time while the children have a lookout. A chaperone will also serve as an aid to make sure the bus stops and there is no bullying.
Notify your school district and request that they move the bus stop. Most transportation directors are reasonable people who truly have your child's safety as their top priority. If you alert them to the situation, they will likely accommodate your request to move the bus stop.
If your child walks to school, make sure they understand that for no reason, should they stop and talk to strangers. If they are old enough and understanding, show them the offenders off of Family Watchdog site so they can avoid certain people.If a child runs into a situation where someone makes them feel uncomfortable, make sure they tell an adult as soon as they get to school so that the problem can be assessed as soon as possible.
Make sure you and your children have a plan for after school activities and transportation for those programs. Make sure your children know what to do once they get home (if they are alone). Leave an emergency number list on the fridge and make sure a trusted neighbor can look after them. It might be a smart idea for the neighbor to hold onto an extra key since all kids will lose a key every now and then.

A parent volunteer,retired Policeman or Security Guard who will accept a small fee from each parent to make sure their child arrives safely going to and from school each day provides peace of mind for the parent, and a sense of security for the child! Encourage your PTA to help initiate the program so your child will not be teased for having an escort or create the program yourself with a group of other concerned parents. The unfolding Syracuse University child abuse allegations, on the heels of the horrific Penn State scandal, contain many essential lessons that must be learned if we are going to end the epidemic that is childhood sexual abuse. Yet equally important is avoiding the trap of mistaken conclusions.
One dangerous false conclusion is that the victims were victims only because they were from underprivileged families; therefore, "our" children are safe. In my work to raise awareness about sexual abuse, I have spoken to hundreds of people who refuse to believe that a blond, white, Jewish girl like myself who grew up in a tony Miami-Dade neighborhood could be a victim.
The fact is, childhood sexual abuse cuts across every demographic, all ethnic lines and income levels. For six years, from age 11 to 17, I was sexually assaulted, daily, as a child of privilege behind the gates of an exclusive, protected community. My abuser was my nanny, my substitute parent, a person with unlimited access to me, while my parents were largely absent.
Calculated attacks
I fear the lesson is being lost that we must specifically empower children to avoid the traps set by predators. Sexual predators lead children through a calculated grooming process. They ask children to withhold harmless information to see whether they can be trusted to keep more damning secrets. They provide attention and privileges that seem so beneficial, they win the favor of children and parents alike. They target good children, eager to please, who come from every ZIP code.
Recently, I was teaching abuse prevention strategies to a kindergarten class, and I asked them whether they have the right to tell an adult that they don't want a hug or a kiss. I watched their intent little faces pondering the question, cautiously nodding yes and no and looking confused.
One of the fundamental lessons we need to teach our children is that their bodies are their own and that they don't have to give kisses, hugs or any other physical acts of affection to adults if they don't want to.
Unsafe vs. safe secrets
Children need to be told that safe secrets are those that eventually are told and that bring smiles to everyone's faces, such as planning a surprise party. Any other secrets are unsafe and they shouldn't be asked to keep them.
It's tempting to allow adults who take a special interest in our children to take them places without us, especially if they offer opportunities to our children that we can't. But, we must keep up our guard on behalf of our children. Researchers with the Center for Behavioral Intervention say the odds are high that we all know one or two child molesters and don't even realize it, a fact supported by an FBI estimate that there is a sex offender living in every square mile of the USA. Sadly, they are a part of our daily lives, and they seek out situations where they will have contact with children.
It's not necessary to speak explicitly about sexual behavior or to make children suspicious of every adult they encounter. Too many adults leave their children at risk by failing to discuss with them a sensitive, troubling topic about a threat seen as too remote. They believe their children are too intelligent, their neighborhood too good, their friends too trustworthy to make the conversation necessary.
That would be a trap. All children deserve to be empowered to listen to the little voice inside them that says, "Something here is not quite right." When that voice speaks, they have to speak, and a trusted adult must be ready to listen.

Your child should RUN home immediately or go to a "TRUSTED" neighbor upon hearing these words. If your child hears a car slow down,especially if he/she is walking alone, tell him/her to move as fast as possible without hesitation to a safe crowded place. Even if this stranger had no bad intentions, it's better to be safe than sorry! Jaycee Dugard was walking alone when her abductors used a stun gun to abduct her. Try to establish a "Buddy System" for your child when going to and from school, or to other activities.

HEALTHY BREAKFASTS! Use Organic products whenever possible. Stretch your dollars by giving your family a nutritious breakfast such as: Cream of Wheat or Oatmeal instead of expensive cereals which contain too much sugar. Three tablespoons of Cream of Wheat or my favorite, "Erewhon" Organic Brown Rice Cream with 2 cups of milk or water will make 1-2 generous portions and is good for your kids! Sweeten with maple syrup or honey, a tsp of butter and add a banana or blueberries for added health benefits. Powdered milk is a healthy alternative to bottled milk. Even more economical is buying organic oatmeal by the pound at your supermarket.
French toast is another favorite and a great treat during school vacation.Use thick sliced bread or a bread called challagh (pronounced Ha La).This is an egg bread which can be sliced very thick for yummy french toast. Here's an easy recipe for 4 servings:
4 eggs, pinch salt, 1 cup milk, butter, maple syrup. Preparation: Break eggs into shallow bowl one at a time, letting bread soak in mixture, turn and then place in skillet, using small amount of vegetable oil just to coat bottom, cooking slowly until golden brown. Turn and brown other side. Serve with butter and maple syrup.
Pancakes are also a favorite. Let your kids help make them from scratch. Serve with hot chocolate or a glass of organic milk.
Easy Pancakes..8 servings...
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon white sugar
1 1/4 cups milk
1 egg
3 tablespoons butter, melted
Directions:
In a large bowl, sift flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Make a well in the center and pour in the milk, egg and melted butter; mix until smooth. Add blueberries for an even more delicious treat!
Heat a lightly oiled frying pan or skillet over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter into frying pan or griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve hot. Top off with a scant of butter and maple syrup. Serve with a delicious glass of organic milk or hot cocoa.
Stock up on potatoes, oranges, bananas, which are frequently on sale. Make your own sweet potato chips! Sweet pototoes are a nutritional powerhouse packed with vitamins, beta-carotene and vitamin A and E which promotes healthy skin, hair and eyesight. These essential antioxidants play important roles in fending off diseases. A serving of berries and broccoli daily helps fight off disease. Don't be fooled by Dollar Stores, many items sold there are actually unhealthy for you, even some that should have been recalled, outdated! You can do better in supermarkets with coupons and sales. Always check expiration dates!
